~~~JANE'S USAF~~~
BOXED with GUIDE
as Pictured
To become a pilot in the United States Air Force you have to go through grueling training and numerous tests of physical and mental ability. Luckily, all you to pretend you are a pilot in the United States Air Force is Jane's USAF and a decent computer. Jane's Combat Simulations latest survey sim puts you in the cockpit of eight different United States Air Force jets, ranging from the Vietnam era F-105 to the futuristic F-22.
Basics of Play
In the tradition of Jane's ATF, Jane's USAF can be picked up and enjoyed by cyber-pilots with all levels of experience. Virtually every aspect of the game can be tweaked through the realism settings. Having trouble with your landings? Turn on easy landings and lower the difficulty of the flight engine a bit.
As someone that just has to play on the most difficult setting, I've found that USAF can be difficult in some areas, while in others it seems to be oversimplified. That is, no doubt, unavoidable when modelling eight radically different planes. One particular aspect that I've found more difficult when compared to previous games is that of missile accuracy, this sim seems to take into account aspect angle and closure rates a bit more than previous games. This means that using weapons such as the AIM 120 efficiently requires more practice.
"But I just want to make things go boom!" You say. Well, Jane's has made it easier than ever to hop right into the game and fly. The game even comes equipped with an Arcade View, complete with an outside bombing pip. Coupled with a toned down flight engine, rookie pilots can opt for a much less formal flight experience. All together this is one of the best flight sims available for pilots of all skill levels.
In either type of play, the learning curve is not as steep as it is in the plane specific simulations. While the basic flight characteristics are accurate, a pilot can pretty much feel comfortable flying any of the included planes right off the tarmac. The similarities between the different planes makes the integration of 'plane-jumping' more natural.
The ability to switch between flight groups, or even individual planes within a flight group, allows you to control what happens during a missions far more than in other simulations that require you to stay in the same cockpit for the whole mission. While this can be useful, as someone that likes to concentrate on the roles of a single fighter, jumping from plane to plane took away a big dollup of the game's realism.
That said, flying the same plane for a whole mission will generally lead to a mission failure, since the artificial intelligence (computer) pilots aren't particularly skilled. While their intelligence is moderate, friendly planes controlled by the computer are prone to crashes when there are mountains around as well as getting shot down within areas defended by anti-aircraft fire.
The missions that come with the game range from the normal basic training maneuvers to full-fledged tours of duty over Vietnam, Iraq and Germany. With a few stand-alone missions to compliment the campaigns, USAF contains a total of 55 missions, as well as any number of quick missions that can be created. USAF also contains a film recorder, so you can go back and review what happened during a mission – this helps tremendously when trying to figure out who knocked out the rescue helicopters for the fifth time.
