EXTREMELY SCARCE and authentic, autograph letter signed (ALS) by DOCTOR John Collins Warren II – on the LETTERHEAD of ”The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal”, the forerunner of today’s esteemed “New England Journal of Medicine”. Letter is dated August 16th 1878 and is written entirely in the hand of and genuinely SIGNED by John Collins Warren II. Letter is two-pages in length (one sheet of paper both sides).
The letter reads in full - “Dear Dr. – I will inquire of Knight what his plans are about the report. Short communication is an experiment. I think we shall keep it up – In regard to Woodworths (?) report – I had written to him to send them to the Journal regularly but your suggestion is better still – Why could you not send out to the press every Monday the last reports you have (as Draper (?) does the (?) tables) without sending them through us. I will have a space reserved for you beginning next week. (???) Yours very truly J. C. Warren”.
JOHN COLLINS WARREN II (1842 – 1927) was the grandson of John C. Warren, founder of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Dean of the Harvard Medical School. His father, Doctor Jonathan Mason Warren (1811 – 1867), performed the first rhinoplasty in the United States in 1836. John Collins Warren II graduated from the Harvard Medical School in 1866 and continued his medical studies in Europe thereafter. Upon his return home, he joined the Harvard medical faculty as an instructor in 1871. He became a full professor of surgery at Harvard in 1893 and was appointed the first Moseley professor of surgery in 1899. He was on the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1869 – 1905 and from 1873 to 1881, was the co-editor of the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal (now the New England Journal of Medicine). John C. Warren II was President of the American Surgical Association (1896 – 97) as well. His principal area of research and expertise was the surgical treatment of tumors.
CONDITION - letter measures about 4 ¾ x 8 inches in size and is EXCELLENT original condition with dark writing and a bold signature. There is one vertical and two horizontal mailing folds, but NO rips or tears (see SCANS).
