Offered here is an original autograph letter signed by Robert Montagu (1825–1902), British Conservative politician and second son of the 6th Duke of Manchester.
Date/Place: October 22, 1891, on letterhead from 41 Queen’s Gate, London S.W.
Content: A short but charming note written to a collector, in which Montagu expresses his “pleasure in forwarding my autograph as you desire.” He signs clearly at the bottom: Robt. Montagu.
Format: 1 page, mounted to backing sheet. Light foxing and toning consistent with age, handwriting remains strong and legible.
Robert Montagu served as Member of Parliament for Huntingdonshire from 1859 to 1874, and held junior office under Prime Minister Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby. Though never achieving the prominence of Disraeli or Gladstone, Montagu was a well-known Victorian political figure and part of an important aristocratic family.
