1912 Royal Household Letter Duke of Fife Acct Princess Louise 15 Portman Square For Sale

Autograph letter signed Taylor, 1 page, dated 15 January 1912, written on the printed stationery of 15, Portman Square, London W — the long‑established London residence of Princess Louise, Princess Royal, eldest daughter of King Edward VII. Princess Louise occupied the house from the late 1880s onward, maintaining it as her principal London base throughout the 1910s.

The letter conveys instructions from Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife, noting that the Duke is “very anxious to receive his account soon and hopes there will be no delay now.” The writer, Taylor, was almost certainly a household secretary or financial agent acting within the Princess Royal’s administrative staff. The content is typical of the estate and financial management carried out from Portman Square, where the Princess Royal oversaw household operations and the Duke’s business affairs.

The date is significant: January 1912 falls within the Duke of Fife’s final year. He died shortly afterwards, following illness contracted during the shipwreck of the SS Delhi in December 1911. Administrative correspondence from this narrow period is relatively uncommon, as household operations were disrupted by the Duke’s declining health and subsequent death.
