The University of Michigan Mall & Burton Memorial Tower The area depicted is known as Ingalls Mall, a central landscaped thoroughfare on the University of Michigan campus. The prominent tall structure on the left is the Burton Memorial Tower, completed in 1936, which houses the Charles Baird Carillon—one of the heaviest carillons in the world. In the background sits the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, a classic example of symmetrical Art Deco architecture completed in 1938. This postcard captures the campus landscape exactly as it appeared in the early years of World War II. This is a well-preserved, unposted example for collectors of Michigan university history, Ann Arbor local subjects, and classic linen-era postcards.
