DescriptionA Naval War Captured in Photographs — July 1905This remarkable Japanese naval photograph album was published on July 20, 1905, just 53 days after the Battle of Tsushima, while the Russo-Japanese War was still being fought. It is Volume III of The Russo-Japanese War: Naval, published in Tokyo by K. Ogawa (Kazumasa Ogawa), one of the pioneers of modern Japanese photography. The title page states that the publication was authorized by the Japanese Naval Department. The Battle That Changed HistoryOn May 27–28, 1905, the Imperial Japanese Navy, commanded by Admiral Heihachiro Togo, defeated the Russian Baltic Fleet in the Battle of Tsushima. The victory helped determine the outcome of the Russo-Japanese War and became one of the most significant naval battles of the early 20th century. This album preserves photographs of Japanese warships, naval operations, sailors, and Russian vessels captured or damaged during the conflict. The Russian Battleship OrelAmong the most fascinating images are photographs of the Russian battleship Orel, which surrendered after the Battle of Tsushima. The album documents the ship’s battle damage, including photographs of its damaged decks and gun positions. The vessel was subsequently incorporated into the Japanese Navy and renamed Iwami. These photographs remind us that behind the familiar names and dates of naval history were real ships, real sailors, and the physical consequences of battle.A Historical Record Intended for an International AudienceAn especially interesting feature is the bilingual Japanese and English captions. The publication also identifies overseas distribution agents in Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore.Published while the war was still underway, this album offers a fascinating glimpse into how Japan presented its naval operations to contemporary readers at home and abroad.ConditionOriginal period publication, dated July 20, 1905.Approximately 38 × 25.5 cm (15 × 10 inches). There is age-related discoloration, staining, wear, and some tears.
