Founded in 1884, this institution holds the prestigious distinction of being the first nursing school established west of the Allegheny Mountains. DOCUMENT & HISTORICAL DETAILS:
This 113-year-old diploma features gorgeous, sweeping calligraphy and incorporates a classic, high-end period presentation: the graduate\'s authentic 1913 school color ribbon (maroon and gold) is threaded directly through a precise, factory-cut slot in the parchment paper. The official crimped institutional seal remains fully intact, physically pressed into the top of the silk ribbons using a heavy hand-press. The document features a wealth of prominent early 20th-century Cleveland medical signatures, hand-signed in ink by the hospital leadership and educational board:
- W. C. Rhodes (President of Huron Road Hospital)
- Alma C. Hogle, R.N. (Superintendent of Hospital)
- Olinda E. Irving, R.N. (Principal of the Training School)
- Dr. G. H. Quay, M.D. (Prominent physician & Dean of Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College)
- Dr. Wm. T. Miller, M.D. (Surgeon & Ohio State Board of Health)
- Dr. H. A. Harrison, Dr. H. B. Baxter, Dr. A. B. Schneider, and Marietta J. Huntington.FRAME & PRESENTATION:
The piece remains safely housed in its factory-original 1910s wide wood frame featuring a flat profile and an elegant interior gold slip. The frame retains its wonderful original graining pattern and its historic rear hanging wire.CONDITION NOTES:
The document exhibits a beautiful, uniform historic amber patina across the paper, adding incredible antique character. There are a couple of minor isolated spots of historic moisture/foxing in the upper corners (clear of text), but the ink signatures, graduate name, and typography remain bold, dark, and perfectly legible.
