Antique multi-tool folding pocket knife, manufactured by the Cattaraugus Cutlery Company in Little Valley, New York. This rare tool represents an early American multi-tool pattern based on the 1918 patent granted to Tint Champlin. It was manufactured primarily between 1918 and 1920. The unique design integrates an adjustable crescent-style wrench at the base with folding implements on the opposing end. The main blade tang displays a highly legible four-line stamp reading "CATTARAUGUS / CUTLERY CO. / LITTLE VALLEY / N.Y."
The multi-tool features dark honey-brown jigged bone handles in a classic Rodgers worm groove pattern, fixed with original brass pins. Built into the top end are two folding steel components: a standard spear point pocket knife blade and a combination flat-head screwdriver, wire scraper, and bottle opener utility tool. The tool measures approximately 4.5 inches long when closed.
The item is in well-utilized vintage condition. The jigged bone handles have aged beautifully with a rich color, though they do show hairline cracks extending through the scales as pictured. Both carbon steel blades exhibit significant sharpening wear, profile loss, a uniform dark patina, and surface pitting consistent with age and field use. Despite the cosmetic wear, the tool remains completely functional. There is tight tension on the backspring with a moderate, positive snap upon opening and closing, and the adjustable crescent wrench mechanism works smoothly with a free-turning thumbwheel. Please look at the high-resolution photos for condition details. This is uncleaned and not oiled, it probably will have even better snap once cleaned and oiled. Thank you for looking.
