Antique Postcard – A Happy Hallowe'en, artist-signed Ellen H. Clapsaddle, International Art Publishing Co. Series No. 1667
An embossed color lithograph. Three children peer over the top of a weathered board fence against a deep blue night sky. The child at the center wears a red coat and a black wide-brimmed hat and holds up a large grinning jack-o'-lantern on a stick, the carved face lit from within with a curl of smoke escaping the top. The child at the left wears an orange and red cap and the child at the right a white bonnet with a red bow, both showing only their eyes and fingertips above the fence boards. A torn white poster nailed to the fence carries the greeting A Happy Hallowe'en in red and blue lettering outlined in yellow. A four-line verse printed across the bottom tells the reader not to be frightened by pumpkin faces or ghosts walking at night, since it is all only Halloween fun. The artist's signature Ellen H. Clapsaddle appears at the lower right.
The back is a divided back printed with the International Art Publishing Co. trademark, New York Berlin, Printed in Germany, and Series No. 1667.
Postmarked in October at Hedgeville, Nova Scotia, with a second partial Nova Scotia strike, franked with a green one-cent Canada postage stamp, and addressed in ink to a Miss at Hedgeville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The correspondence side is filled edge to edge with a long handwritten message.
