DESCRIPTION
A large and visually striking woven jacquard coverlet with legend woven into the border reading "MADE. BY. WM. NEY. MYERSTOWN. N. LEBANON CO. PA.," indicating Myerstown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Red, olive green and dark indigo colors on a beige ground. Floral and foliate patterns with a large central medallion. Fringe trim on three edges. A similar example of Ney's work is held by the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
CONDITION
Overall excellent. Colors bright. No moth holes or other damage. Edge fringe in good condition with some shortened sections (all visible in the images). A LARGE AND BEAUTIFUL MID-19TH CENTURY AMERICAN COVERLET BY A WELL-DOCUMENTED PENNSYLVANIA WEAVER.
William Ney was born in 1811 and died in 1892. He was most active around the middle of the 19th century. Local legend has it that when he retired, he discarded his loom into the depths of the Millardsville Quarry in Myerstown.
