Art Deco .935 Silver and Red & Black Enamel Vanity Case, Retailed by Cartier For Sale

An exceptionally elegant Art Deco silver and enamel vanity case or minaudiere, circa 1920s–1930s, retailed by Cartier.Of rectangular form with gently curved sides, the case is richly decorated with alternating panels of brilliant red and black enamel, framed by finely engraved silver mounts. A striking black enamel Greek-key border runs along the upper and lower edges, emphasizing the strong geometric design characteristic of the Art Deco period.The hinged case opens to reveal a beautifully fitted gold-washed interior, incorporating a mirror and two hinged compartments designed for powder and other cosmetic necessities. The interior is inscribed “Cartier.” The case retains its black silk cord wrist strap and tassel, which beautifully complement the black enamel decoration.The silver is stamped “935,” denoting a fineness of 935/1000, slightly higher than sterling silver. No other maker’s marks are present. While the precise manufacturer has not been identified, the .935 silver standard and construction are consistent with Continental European manufacture, possibly Swiss or Austrian.
