Developed by MicroProse Software, Inc. and published by MicroProse Software, Inc. in 1998, European Air War is a World War II combat flight simulation covering the Battle of Britain and the later Allied air offensives over Western Europe. Players can enter Quick Start and single-mission engagements or build a Pilot Career with the U.S. Army Air Force, Royal Air Force, or Luftwaffe, flying 20 modeled fighter aircraft including the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf 109, Fw 190, and Me 262. Its dynamic campaigns preserve battlefield developments from mission to mission, while large aerial formations, varied mission types, squadron command, historical newsreels, and multiplayer combat broaden the simulation beyond individual dogfights.
European Air War (1998) refined the World War II combat-flight genre through persistent dynamic campaigns and unusually large-scale aerial engagements, with the simulation capable of tracking as many as 256 aircraft in the air. It became one of the most acclaimed simulations of its year, winning Computer Gaming World's Best Simulation, GameSpot's Simulation of the Year, IGN's Best Simulation of the Year, Computer Games Strategy Plus's Simulation Game of the Year, and CNET Gamecenter's Best Combat Flight Sim award.
