Iolani Palace Honolulu Hawaii Stereoview Keystone View Co. 1929 Curved Mount:
$24.99

This antique stereoview card presents a captivating 3D image of the Government Building, formerly known as the Royal Palace, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The view showcases the grand architecture of the palace, flanked by lush palm trees, offering a glimpse into Hawaii\'s history. The card features a curved mount, characteristic of stereoviews from the early 20th century, designed to enhance the immersive 3D viewing experience when used with a stereoscope viewer. The reverse side of this stereograph provides extensive historical context about the building and Honolulu. It states: \"20571 GOVERNMENT BUILDING, FORMERLY THE ROYAL PALACE, HONOLULU, T. H. Many exciting incidents have marked the history of the building before us, which, with its broad verandas and large windows, is well adapted architecturally to the semi-tropical climate of Hawaii. It was built as a palace for the royal family of Hawaii when the latter was still a kingdom, and was occupied by the last royal ruler, Queen Liliuokalani, until she was deposed in January, 1893. The government buildings, including the palace, were then seized by revolutionists, and a republic, under the presidency of Sanford B. Dole, was proclaimed to succeed the monarchy. Five years later Hawaii was annexed to the United States, the formal transfer of sovereignty taking place on August 12, 1898, when the United States flag was raised over this building. Honolulu, in common with all the Hawaiian Islands, of which it is the capital and chief city, has prospered remarkably under American rule. In 1900 it had a population of less than 40,000, which by 1928 had increased to about 113,000. The city has many fine buildings and institutions and its educational facilities, like those of the rest of the territory, are unsurpassed. Hawaii is known as \'the crossroads of the Pacific,\' and is regularly visited by great numbers of ships passing between the ports of North and South America, Asia, and the widely scattered islands of the Pacific. Honolulu harbor is equipped with the most modern types of wharves, dry docks, and freight-handling apparatus; and six miles west of the city, at Pearl Harbor, is the greatest naval station and military post belonging to the United States. Copyright Keystone View Company.\"This single stereoview card, published by the renowned Keystone View Company, offers a valuable piece of Hawaiian history and a classic example of stereoscopic photography. It is an excellent addition for collectors of antique stereoviews, historical photography, or those interested in Hawaii\'s past, particularly the Iolani Palace and its transition from a royal residence to a government building. The card displays the Keystone View Company logo and publisher details on the left edge, and their branch offices (Meadville, Pa., New York, N.Y., Chicago, Ill., London, England) on the right edge, along with the view number \'T591\' and two stars.
