Provenance: This photograph comes directly from the Marty Himes Racing Museum Collection, assembled over decades by Marty Himes - racer, restorer, and lifelong archivist of American racing. Every piece he preserved tells part of the story of motorsport’s rise from dirt tracks to the spectacle of the Indy 500. We acquired the majority of his photo collection after his passing. Many of his photos are extremely rare or even one of a kind. Professionally packaged in a rigid mailer for safe delivery.

Johnny White was one of Midwestern open wheel racing's most promising stars of the early 1960s, later becoming 1964 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year before his career was tragically cut short by a spinal injury in a sprint car crash that same season. IMCA sprint races at Tampa's dirt mile were a winter proving ground where top drivers from across the country tuned up for the USAC and Indy car seasons. Print analysis:
Single-weight fiber-based photographic paper with wide white borders and a period typewritten caption on the reverse are consistent with early to mid 1960s darkroom prints made for personal or team use. The image comes from the Marty Himes Racing Museum collection, which preserved many contemporary 8x10 prints sourced directly from photographers and race teams. There are no later lab or wire-service stamps suggesting a later reproduction, and the neutral tonality and surface match other known early 1960s racing photos. Based on these factors, this is best classified as a Type 1 photo, printed from the original negative within a few years of when it was taken, likely in 1963.
Condition: Please see scans of the image we have provided for the most accurate and complete state of the photo. Many of the photos in this collection are very old and have age related wear, chips, creases, curling, etc. Others are remarkably well maintained.
