The Game
King's Quest V takes place several years after the end of King's Quest IV. In the previous game, King Graham, the main character from the original two King's Quest titles, fell ill and his daughter, Princess Rosella traveled to the land of Tamir to retrieve a magical fruit that would restore King Graham to health. Having succeeded in her quest the King is now in perfect health, although quite a bit older than he was when the King's Quest series started. He has gray hair and has gained quite a bit of weight. Things have been going well in the land of Daventry, which Graham rules, and the game opens with Graham out for a leisurely morning stroll through the countryside.

All cannot stay peaceful for long, or there would be no plot to the game. While Graham is out for his walk, the evil wizard Mordack appears and casts a spell which whisks away Graham's castle, his family trapped inside. Graham returns home to find a hole in the ground where his castle once stood. He is told of what happened by Cedric, a talking owl who happened to witness the entire event. Cedric takes King Graham to see Crispin, a powerful wizard and Cedric's owner. Crispin tells Graham that Mordack lives on an island to the east, and orders Cedric to accompany King Graham on this quest. With this knowledge, Graham and the owl set out to rescue Graham's family and castle.

Graham and Cedric must travel through the land of Serenia, searching for Mordack's island. Along the way it is discovered why Mordack kidnapped the royal family. Mordack is seeking revenge on King Graham's son, Alexander for turning Mordack's brother, the wizard Manannan, into a black cat (which took place in King's Quest III). Mordack has miniaturized King Graham's castle and family and imprisoned them in a glass jar. If Prince Alexander doesn't undo his spell Graham's family will be fed, one by one, to the cat. Graham must find Mordack's island and rescue his family before it's too late.

King's Quest V was the first Sierra adventure game to use an icon-based interface rather than the parser interface utilized in the previous King's Quest games. The user controls King Graham strictly through mouse commands. Rather than type "Look at the cat" there is an icon of an eye which the player selects and then clicks on the cat. All of the game's actions have been reduced to four general icons: Walk, Talk, Look, and the more general Action command, which will move, activate, or take the object, depending on what the item is. In addition, the player's inventory has gone from a text list to a graphical box, where the user can select an item from his inventory with the mouse and then click in the game where he wants to use the item.

Purists railed against this change in format, claiming that the games became too easy when there are only a handful of icons to choose from, but I disagree with that line of thinking. By using a pointer-based interface, I believe the games opened up allowing for greater enjoyment of the games. Now a gamer can have fun playing King's Quest V without having to worry about which verb the programmers wanted him to type to command Graham to toss a shoe. This interface would go on to be used in the remakes of classic Sierra adventure games, such as Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, and Police Quest.

The game's story holds up fairly well and King Graham's quest to rescue his family works well as a plot. It's also nice to see Manannan make a return appearance as he was the series' best villain to date. This is the first time a King's Quest title has tied its story into a previous game. It's a technique that works well and gives the universe a more coherent feeling whereas the previous games were simply quest after quest, with little interrelation between the games' stories.

King's Quest V was a technical marvel for its time, with its new sound and graphics capabilities. Games would benefit from this engine for several years to come as it was an obvious turning point in the genre. The story is ultimately refreshing as it shows that problems can be solved through logic rather than violence and that good deeds are rewarded.Hey, even a middle-aged, complacent king can go out and save the world.

Note: My compatibility CD does not alter the retail game or bypass copy protection. It allows the original media to install and run correctly on any recent version of Windows.
