Developed by Activision and published by Activision in 1996, MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat places players inside the cockpit of a BattleMech during the Clan conflicts of the 31st century. Set in 3057, the game follows the rival Clan Wolf and Clan Jade Falcon campaigns, combining real-time 3D combat with customizable OmniMechs, weapon and equipment management, mission objectives, promotion trials, and a progression system built around a complete MechWarrior career. Players can customize a selection of BattleMechs and engage enemies across varied environments while managing armor, weapon systems, targeting, heat, and battlefield positioning.

MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat helped define the mech-combat simulation genre during the mid-1990s, combining accessible first-person 3D action with the systems-driven complexity associated with the BattleTech universe. Its presentation, atmospheric soundtrack, cockpit-based combat, and detailed BattleMech customization became defining elements of the series. Computer Gaming World named the game its Space Simulation of the Year in 1996 and later inducted it into the publication's Hall of Fame in 1998, reflecting the title's lasting importance among 1990s computer simulations.

Collectors interested in MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat may also want to explore MechWarrior (1989), the earlier series entry that established its cockpit-based BattleMech combat; MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy (1995), the official expansion adding Clan Ghost Bear and a new campaign; MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries (1996), the standalone expansion that returned to a contract-driven mercenary career; Earthsiege 2 (1996), a contemporary mech-focused vehicle simulation; Heavy Gear (1997), developed by much of the same Activision team using an enhanced version of the MechWarrior 2 engine; and MechWarrior 3 (1999), the later mainline continuation of the series.
