Up for sale is an authentic, original vintage British Official Photograph issued for the Central Office of Information (COI) in London. This historical 1962 medical press print documents the sweeping mid-century institutional architecture of the Protectorate of Uganda just prior to national independence.
Subject: A sharp bird's-eye aerial view capturing the sprawling grid of the big new teaching hospital facility at Mulago, situated just outside Kampala. The massive multi-wing modernist complex features interconnected multi-story ward blocks, a curved building wing on the right, and localized access roads cutting through the developing institutional grounds.

Historical Context:The highly detailed typewritten archival narrative on the reverse records that the main building pictured was designed to contain 900 beds. Two-thirds of the massive construction cost (£2,100,000) was funded directly via United Kingdom Colonial Development and Welfare funds.
The accompanying report maps out the broader medical infrastructure of Uganda in early 1962, noting that the territory contained 27 Government hospitals providing over 4,000 beds, supplemented by nearly 1,900 beds across various mission hospitals and roughly 7,500 beds in local dispensaries and maternity centers. The text tracks a rapid post-war expansion under recommendations from a committee appointed in 1955, detailing an increased emphasis on rural dispensaries, nurse training, and the recruitment of doctors. Crucially, it highlights that the Licentiate ship of Medicine & Surgery of East Africa, awarded by the nearby Makerere College, had achieved full recognition by Britain's General Medical Council.
Condition Note:This original period press print is in very good vintage condition. The glossy gelatin-silver surface delivers excellent definition, crisp geometric lines, and a beautiful range of mid-century gray tones. The print exhibits only minor edge handling characteristics and very light corner rubbing typical of archival media repository prints from this run.
Archival Markings:The reverse features a complete, clearly struck blue ink-stamped narrative information text block alongside a faint purple date stamp reading "MARCH 1962". The headers preserve the original administrative lines: "COMMONWEALTH: EAST AFRICA: UGANDA. PICTURE NUMBER: K.30568."
