Beautiful Mastana (Unkuña, Unquna)- Tablecloth that was woven in the Ccatca Community.Authentic Q'ero Andean Unkuña (Unquna) – Handwoven Alpaca & Llama Wool Mesa Cloth – Despacho Altar Textile – Cusco, PeruA Sacred Textile of the Living Andes
Handwoven in one of the remote Q'ero communities near Ocongate, Cusco, this authentic Unkuña (also spelled Unquna) is a traditional ceremonial textile deeply rooted in the spiritual heritage of the Quechua people. Also known as a Mastana, this sacred cloth has long been used in Despacho and Pago a la Pachamama ceremonies, where offerings of gratitude are presented to Pachamama (Mother Earth), the Apus (Sacred Mountain Spirits), and the natural world.

Within the Andean tradition, the Unkuña serves as the sacred foundation of the ceremonial altar. It is upon this cloth that offerings are lovingly arranged, creating a symbolic space where prayer, gratitude, and harmony with nature come together. It is also traditionally used to carry and protect sacred coca leaves, one of the most revered ceremonial plants of the Andes.

Sacred Andean Symbolism

The woven designs honor the Andean Trilogy, the three sacred beings that represent the interconnected worlds of Inca cosmology:

Kuntur (Condor): Guardian of Hanan Pacha, the Upper World. The condor is revered as the messenger of the Apus and symbolizes vision, peace, and spiritual elevation.
Puma: Guardian of Kay Pacha, the earthly realm where humanity walks. The puma embodies courage, wisdom, strength, and purposeful living.
Sachamama (Serpent): Guardian of Ukhu Pacha, the inner world and the fertile realm of Pachamama. The serpent symbolizes transformation, renewal, fertility, and the eternal cycle of life.

Together, these sacred beings express the harmony and balance between heaven, earth, and the inner spiritual world.

The Awayu Tradition

This Unkuña is woven in the traditional Awayu (Aguayo) style, one of the most recognizable textile traditions of the Andes. Crafted from natural alpaca and llama wool, the cloth reflects generations of ancestral weaving knowledge passed down through Q'ero families. Every thread and geometric pattern carries the spirit of Andean craftsmanship and the enduring connection between people, mountains, and the living earth.

Pachamama and the Despacho

In the Quechua worldview, Pachamama is the nurturing spirit of the earth, honored as the source of life, abundance, and balance. A Despacho (Quechua: Haywarisq'a) is a sacred offering created with gratitude and intention, celebrating the relationship between humanity, nature, the Apus, and the cosmos. The Unkuña plays an essential role in these ceremonies, holding the offerings that symbolize reciprocity and respect for all living beings.

Whether displayed on a meditation altar, incorporated into personal spiritual practice, or appreciated as an exceptional example of Indigenous Andean weaving, this textile is both a meaningful ceremonial cloth and a timeless work of art.
