RARE Antique 17th-18thC Skeleton Key Hand Wrought Iron 6.25" Castle Jail Chest For Sale

Up for sale or buy-it-now is a truly magnificent, authentic antique hand-wrought iron skeleton key. Dating back to the late 17th Century to the 18th Century, this substantial piece is a testament to pre-industrial craftsmanship. It was individually hand-forged by a blacksmith, likely in Europe or Colonial America, to operate a large warded rim lock, heavy castle door, jail entryway, or massive iron armada strongbox.Dimensions & Specifications

• Total Length: Exactly 6-1/4 inches
• Material: Solid Hand-Wrought Iron
• Design Elements: Classic oval bow (handle), a solid tapered barrel, and a complex rolled/folded bit with a distinctive curved bottom lip designed to clear internal lock wards.

Condition
Considering its remarkable age of 250+ years, this key is in good to very good condition, and could easily be argued as excellent condition for a historical iron artifact. Please study the included photos carefully as they serve as the definitive visual guide to its physical state:

• The iron retains a gorgeous, deep, dark chocolate-brown natural patina that only centuries of time can create.
• There is no major structural damage, bending, or deep, flaky rust rot.
• The surface shows expected, authentic pitting, minor superficial rust highlights, and slight forge irregularities that prove it is a genuine hand-made item rather than a modern cast-iron reproduction.

Collector's Note
The historical patina has been left completely original and untouched. It has not been cleaned, wire-brushed, or chemically altered, preserving its maximum historical integrity and value for serious hardware collectors. This is a premier display piece perfect for any collection of early metalwork, antique locks, or historical oddities.
