An extraordinary vintage Burmese Kalaga wall hanging, richly hand-embroidered and heavily embellished with intricate beadwork, sequins, metallic threads and jewel accents.This impressive textile depicts six elaborately adorned ceremonial elephants, each individually detailed and framed within ornate architectural arches. The elephants are densely covered in shimmering sequins and embroidery, with colorful jeweled saddle and headdress details. The surrounding borders are equally elaborate, featuring intricate scrolling, floral and geometric designs.Traditional Kalaga tapestries are associated with Myanmar (Burma) and are known for their labor-intensive raised embroidery and lavish surface decoration. This large example is particularly striking because of its dramatic black ground, extensive embellishment and repeating elephant composition.At approximately 51 inches wide, this is a substantial statement piece with incredible visual presence. Some hanging loops show wear/fraying.
