Theatre of War, 1992, Big Box, New & Sealed:

Developed by Artech Digital Entertainment and published by Three-Sixty Pacific in 1992, Theatre of War is an abstract real-time strategy game that reimagines the structure of chess and traditional computer wargaming as a constantly moving battlefield. Players command stylized pieces across variable boards that can reach 50×50 tiles, using movement, ranged attacks, supply, terrain manipulation, mines, artillery, armor, and other specialized abilities. Three complete force sets—Medieval, The Great War, and Contemporary—give the underlying system different tactical identities, while solo scenarios, computer opposition, two-player play on a single computer, and serial-link competition provide multiple approaches to battle.

Theatre of War (1992) is notable as an ambitious early experiment in combining real-time strategy with unusually advanced audiovisual presentation. Contemporary coverage highlighted its 256-color SVGA modes, VESA support, ray-traced three-dimensional-style pieces, adaptive music, digitized voice, and real-time modem play. Computer Gaming World described its design as a chess-like strategy game unfolding in real time, while the retail box prominently marketed Theatre of War as the “World’s First Super VGA Game!”—a technically significant claim for a strategy title from 1992, even though contemporary reviewers noted that other games were also experimenting with SVGA technology.

Collectors interested in Theatre of War may also want to explore Archon: The Light and the Dark (1983), an earlier board-strategy hybrid built around distinct pieces and computer-driven combat; Battle Chess (1988), which similarly transforms a traditional chessboard into a visual spectacle; Command HQ (1990), an early real-time computer wargame emphasizing rapid strategic command; Armor Alley (1991), another Three-Sixty Pacific release combining real-time combat and strategy; and The Perfect General (1991), a board-like tactical wargame centered on controlling military units across a structured battlefield. Together, these games illustrate the transition from tabletop-inspired computer strategy toward the faster, more dynamic systems that Theatre of War explored in 1992.
