Vintage 1970s Pacific Beach Hotel Waikiki Hawaii Matchbook HTH Honolulu Unstruck:
$14.99

The Pacific Beach Hotel opened in 1969 and became part of Herbert T. Hayashi's hotel interests when he acquired the property in 1970. Hayashi's HTH Corporation — named for his initials — subsequently developed the Pacific Beach into the company's flagship Waikiki hotel. The HTH Corporation name and logo appear directly on this matchbook.

The hotel became a significant Waikiki landmark. Hayashi expanded the property, including construction of the Oceanarium Tower, and in 1978 added its celebrated three-story, 280,000-gallon indoor saltwater Oceanarium, at the time the largest indoor oceanarium in Hawaii.

This example carries the classic Pacific Beach Hotel diver-and-tropical-fish logo in blue. The reverse identifies the property as:

2490 Kalakaua Avenue
Honolulu, Hawaii 96815
Tel. [phone removed by ]
HTH Corporation

Inside is the hotel's toll-free reservation number, [phone removed by ]. Both the Kalakaua Avenue address and these telephone numbers are documented in connection with the Pacific Beach Hotel.

Best estimated date is circa 1975–1980, although no date is printed on the matchbook. The HTH ownership identification establishes it as post-1970, while the typography, graphic treatment and construction are consistent with the 1970s period.

Original matches remain intact and appear unstruck. Attractive blue printing on a silver/pearl cover with the hotel's period scuba-diver logo. Light age/storage wear as shown in the photographs.

The Pacific Beach Hotel name ultimately disappeared in 2017 following a $115 million redevelopment, when the property became the ʻAlohilani Resort Waikiki Beach.

A nice piece of vintage Waikiki ephemera with direct ties to the Hayashi family's HTH Corporation and the development of one of Honolulu's longtime resort hotels. Excellent for collectors of Hawaii, Waikiki, vintage hotel, travel, tiki-era tourism, or matchbook memorabilia.
