Rare Vintage Japanese Buddhist Commemorative Incense Burner
This substantial lidded incense burner was created to commemorate the 700th memorial observance of Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu tradition of Japanese Buddhism.
The Japanese inscription on the underside reads approximately:
“Commemorating the 700th Memorial Observance of the Founder”
“Rentsuji Temple”
Shinran Shonin’s 700th memorial observance was held in 1961, dating this piece to approximately the early 1960s.
The incense burner features an impressive archaic-style design inspired by ancient East Asian ritual vessels. It is decorated with raised symbolic patterns, sculptural beast or dragon-shaped handles, a removable lid, and a substantial pedestal base. Its aged green and dark surface gives it a dignified appearance with considerable historical character.
This is believed to have been produced by Rentsuji Temple as a special commemorative item for the memorial observance. It may have been presented to temple supporters or members of the congregation. Its actual history of use inside a temple is unknown.
