This is a cloth embroidered patch from Privateer 2: The Darkening, the 1996 space trading and combat simulator developed by EA Manchester under the Origin Systems label. These two patches were never packaged, sold, or distributed at retail — they came directly from the personal collection of Billy Joe Cain, who worked at Origin Systems and is credited on Privateer 2's official development team as "Additional Testers (U.S. Product Support)."
**Why It Matters**
Privateer 2 arrived during the last great era of PC "big-box" gaming, when a $60 game came stuffed with physical extras nobody expects from a digital download today. The game itself was a genuine production event: its full-motion video cutscenes were filmed on real sets and starred Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Clive Owen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner, and Brian Blessed, on a $5 million budget that was enormous for a game at the time. Billy was already lead designer on Wing Commander: Prophecy at the time, working directly with the Manchester development team on playbalance and response between the U.S. and U.K. offices, while also contributing to Privateer 2's testing and product support.

I worked at Origin Systems on Privateer 2: The Darkening. These two patches never went into a retail box — they came out of my own time on the project, and they've been with me ever since. This is about as direct a piece of Origin history as it gets: not a promotional leftover, but something that actually passed through the studio during the making of the game.
