Born in Karlsruhe, he began his professional career as a daguerreotypist in Stuttgart before settling in Paris in 1850. There he adopted the French form of his first name and established a portrait studio on the Boulevard Saint-Martin, later operating from premises on the Rue de Richelieu and the Boulevard Montmartre.Reutlinger developed one of the leading photographic establishments in nineteenth-century Paris. His studio became especially associated with polished portrait photography of actors, opera singers, dancers, musicians, artists, writers, political figures, and members of fashionable society. Many of these portraits were issued as cartes de visite and cabinet photographs, formats that helped circulate likenesses of celebrated individuals to a broad public. His work is represented in major museum and library collections, including portraits of figures such as Hector Berlioz, Giuseppe Verdi, Prosper Mérimée, François Guizot, and Jules Simon.Reutlinger was a member of the Société française de photographie from 1862 to 1880 and served as its second administrator in 1867. That same year, the studio received a first prize at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, a distinction subsequently advertised on its portrait mounts. In 1880 Reutlinger withdrew from the business and transferred the studio to his younger brother, Émile Reutlinger. Émile was later succeeded by his son, Léopold-Émile Reutlinger, who expanded the firm’s reputation during the Belle Époque through portraits of theatrical and music-hall performers. The Reutlinger studio remained active until 1937, making Charles Reutlinger the founder of a photographic dynasty whose work documented Parisian cultural and social life for nearly nine de Presles was a French actress and music-hall performer active in Paris during the Belle Époque. Little reliable information survives concerning her birth, family, or early career, and her stage name is the principal form under which she was known. Her career was brief but sufficiently visible to leave a record in theatrical photography, illustrated posters, and celebrity postcards of the period. She is most closely associated with the Folies-Bergère production Le Réveil d’une Parisienne, in which she appeared in 1894 in the role of Madame. The production was advertised in a large poster by Lucien Baylac, while a contemporary press photograph identifies de Presles in costume for the part. The work belonged to the popular Parisian music-hall tradition of the 1890s, combining theatrical display, fashion, dance, and suggestive stage effects.De Presles was photographed by the Reutlinger studio and circulated in postcard portraits, placing her among the actresses and performers who became recognizable figures in the illustrated popular culture of fin-de-siècle Paris. Contemporary and later accounts also associate her with the Cigale, another important Parisian music-hall venue.Renée de Presles died in July 1897, apparently before reaching the age of thirty. Although her life and full repertory remain poorly documented, her association with Le Réveil d’une Parisienne and the surviving visual material have preserved her as a minor but distinctive figure of 1890s Parisian stage culture.
