A rare original broadside printing of the 1790An Act for the Government and Regulation of Seamen in the Merchants\' Serviceover the names of George Washington and John Adams. On the back is a filled in and signed agreement between the master of the Schooner Ezra Matthias Attinou and eight crew members, including their quality and pay, for an 1804 voyage to Kingston, Jamaica. The size is about 12 1/2\" x 15 1/2\".
The Act was an early federal law requiring strict contracts to be signed and followed by a ship\'s master and his crew for interstate voyages. Between about 1795 and 1800, the law was printed with a blank agreement form on the verso in several American port cities.
Fair or better condition as shown. The document is still supple, not brittle, and can be handled and read without fear. It has been folded into quarters and there are small tears on the folds. Soiling and overall toning from age. The writing is nicely legible. Displays incredibly well.
