Antique 1853 THE FRIEND Hawaii Newspaper - Original Honolulu Imprint

An authentic issue of 'The Friend', published in Honolulu, Hawaii, and dated November 1, 1853. Complete 8 pages, verified against the Mission Houses archive, letterpress printed on heavy cotton-rag woven paper. Measures approximately 11 3/8" tall by 9" wide, printed some 105 years before Hawaii became a US state.

Highlights include first-hand accounts of the 1853 wrecks of the American whaleships Susan and Liverpool 2d, along with Arctic exploration correspondence detailing ice movements in the Bering Straits. The issue closes with a detailed Marine Journal recording all whaling and merchant vessel traffic through the ports of Honolulu and Lahaina, an invaluable record of the Kingdom of Hawaii's mid-century golden age of shipping.

Condition

• Original condition throughout; no cutouts, no tape, no restoration.
• Heavy cotton-rag paper with natural warm toning and visible fiber at the edges; appears to have seen very little light and was not displayed.
• Original letterpress printing evident, with raised space marks and characteristic ink variations present.
• Gutter crease and small binding cracks consistent with prior inclusion in a bound volume.
• A handful of small edge tears and rounded corners consistent with age.
• Minimal damp staining, confined to the gutter and inner margin.
• Very light foxing only.
• Dealer pencil inscription at top right of the front page; no other markings.
• Currently fitted in a pair of archival non-PVC document sleeves, with the centers merged to accommodate the odd size.
