ABOUT THIS PRINT
Original Puck centerfold titled “Looking Forward,” illustrated by J. S. Pughe and published November 1, 1899 in Puck, Volume 46, No. 1182. The image depicts the symbolic female figure of Cuba kneeling beside Uncle Sam and appealing for continued American assistance following the Spanish-American War.
Behind Cuba is a dark landscape of destruction with smoke labeled “Famine,” “Pestilence,” “War” and “Revolt.” Beyond Uncle Sam, a bright sunrise marked “Peace and Prosperity” illuminates farms, factories, ships and Cuban exports including tobacco, cigars, sugar, coffee and fruit. The contrast presents two possible futures for the island.
The printed caption reads: “Cuba.—If you leave me to myself it will mean the old troubles. With your help I can have Peace and Prosperity. Do not desert me!”
Signed J. S. Pughe within the image and bearing the original Copyright 1899 by Keppler & Schwarzmann notice and J. Ottmann Lith. Co., Puck Bldg., N.Y. imprint. Its dramatic composition, vivid color and important Cuban-American historical subject make this an especially striking and collectible Puck centerfold.
ABOUT THESE VINTAGE PRINTS
Judge and Puck were influential American illustrated humor and political satire publications of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their large-format color illustrations documented the political, social and cultural issues of their era through elaborate cartoons, caricatures and satirical artwork.
These surviving pages are now more than a century old and may show characteristics associated with their original publication, handling and storage. Each piece is being offered individually so its specific artwork and condition can be clearly photographed and described.

PACKAGING & SHIPPING
These antique paper pieces are extremely delicate and must be handled with great care.
For protection during shipment, the item will be placed in a protective plastic sleeve, secured between two pieces of cardboard, and shipped inside a rigid mailer to help prevent bending or damage in transit.
PLEASE USE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVING THE ITEM FROM ITS PACKAGING.
Because of the age and fragile nature of the paper, pulling, bending, catching an edge, or handling it roughly could cause damage. Please remove the protective materials slowly and carefully and support the piece fully when handling.
