1901 Alva Oklahoma R M Davis Lumber Yard Portrait Letterhead Kiowa Comanche:
$99.99

Original typed business letter dated July 1, 1901, on “New Lumber Yard” stationery identifying R. M. Davis as proprietor in Alva, Oklahoma.

The illustrated letterhead features a red printed portrait, red and black advertising, and “Phone No. 1.” It advertises building materials, laths, shingles, lime, cement and coal, with yards at Alva and Cherokee, Oklahoma.

Based on our reading, the letter discusses a friend’s plans to establish a lumber yard in the “Kiowa and Camanche Country” as soon as it opens. It asks a Houston lumber company about supplying approximately seven to ten railroad cars of opening stock, arranging delivery to avoid demurrage charges, and the writer’s commission.

The letter also offers an interesting glimpse into personal vouching in business. The writer states that the prospective buyer had previously worked with him in the lumber business and would either pay in advance or have the writer personally take responsibility for the amount. This is believed to illustrate how personal relationships and financial backing could help establish a buyer’s creditworthiness. The letter does not confirm whether credit was ultimately granted.

This summary represents our best interpretation of the letter. Please review the photographs for the exact wording, including period spelling and typing corrections.

The letter ends with a typed “Yours truly,” but no handwritten signature is visible. The portrait is printed as part of the stationery.

Condition: Age toning, horizontal and vertical folds, creasing, minor edge and corner wear, scattered small spots, and numerous small pinholes or punctures visible particularly from the reverse. The printed heading and typed text remain readable. Please examine all photographs for condition details.

An interesting piece of early Oklahoma business correspondence featuring lumber trade advertising, personal financial assurances, and plans for supplying a new yard in the Kiowa and Comanche country.

Includes the single letter shown.
