Original World War II U.S. Army Air Forces handwritten letter and matching envelope, dated July 11, 1945, from T/Sgt Ralph W. McCutcheon Jr., a WWII U.S. Army Air Forces veteran.
The letter is written on attractive original Army Air Forces stationery featuring the winged propeller insignia and was mailed from Scott Field, Illinois. The original envelope is postmarked Scott Field, IL, July 12, 1945 and identifies the sender with Squadron “B,” 3505th A.A.F. Base Unit, Scott Field, Illinois.
The letter was sent to McCutcheon’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. McCutcheon Sr. of Ripley, New York.
An especially interesting piece of late-WWII correspondence, the letter discusses military life near the end of the war, including servicemen being released or transferred to bases closer to home based on their number of “points.” McCutcheon also writes about hoping to leave the Army, returning home, visiting his family, his wife Marie, and everyday family matters.
Historical research identifies Ralph W. McCutcheon Jr. (1919–2006) as a Technical Sergeant and WWII veteran of the U.S. Army Air Forces.
