In the late 1800s, both infant boys and girls were routinely dressed in long white gowns for formal photographs to symbolize purity and simplify washing. White cotton and linen were easy to bleach, and the long skirts helped conceal the infant's feet while seated in studio props.Goldsboro, North Carolina, was a thriving railroad and agricultural hub after the Civil War, supporting local studio photographers like J. H. Mather who provided lasting mementos for local families.CONDITION:* Photograph: Excellent antique condition given its age. Shows light tone aging, minor surface wear, and fading consistent with late 19th-century albumen or gelatin silver prints. The handwritten name remains crisp and legible.* Frame: Very good condition with intentional modern antique/shabby-chic distressing. The velvet easel backing and hanging hardware are fully intact and functional.
