Antique Orthodox Icon – Saints Peter & Paul with Christ – Hand Painted Wood Panel
Beautiful antique Eastern Orthodox religious icon depicting Saints Peter and Paul standing beneath Christ in Heaven.
Saint Peter is shown holding his traditional key, while Saint Paul holds a book, representing his writings and teachings. Above the two saints is a smaller image of Christ surrounded by a dark celestial form. Traditional inscriptions appear above the figures.
The icon is hand painted on a solid wooden panel and measures approximately 7" x 6". The surface displays extensive age-related craquelure, darkening, scratches, paint loss, small losses and general wear, giving the piece a wonderful old-world appearance.
The reverse retains an older handwritten label identifying the subject as Peter & Paul and referencing the 19th century. The exact age, geographic origin and attribution have not been independently authenticated, so please use the photographs to evaluate the piece.
There is a prominent dark/black painted or restored area across the upper central portion of the icon. Its age and purpose are unknown and it may represent an old alteration, restoration or overpainting.
A fascinating devotional piece with strong visual character that would make an excellent addition to a collection of antique religious art, Eastern Orthodox icons, Christian devotional objects or European folk art.
Measures approximately 7" x 6".
Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition, surface wear, losses, craquelure, markings and details.
