Antique Victorian Toleware “CLOVES” Spice Tin CanisterWonderful antique toleware spice canister featuring a reddish-brown japanned/painted finish with decorative gilt stenciling and large “CLOVES” lettering across the front.The canister has an unusual sloped top with a rounded hinged access lid and white porcelain knob. Decorative floral and line stenciling remains visible along the front and lid. The interior shows traditional folded/seamed sheet-metal construction with an aged metal finish.Based on the construction and decorative style, this piece appears consistent with late 19th-century / Victorian-era kitchen and pantry ware. It may originally have been part of a larger spice set with individual containers for cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, mace, allspice, etc. No maker’s mark has been located, so the exact manufacturer and date are unknown.Condition:
Good antique condition considering its age, with substantial authentic wear and patina throughout. There are scratches, scuffs, finish loss, oxidation, discoloration and wear/fading to the decorative stenciling. The interior also shows oxidation, staining and age-related wear. The hinged lid opens and closes, and the porcelain knob is present. This piece has not been restored or refinished.Please review all photographs carefully for condition, construction and details.
