This vintage printed postcard features a dramatic bird\'s-eye view of the Great Northern Railroad\'s famous three-track switchback system through the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The black-and-white image captures steep, snow-capped mountain slopes densely forested with conifers, with a train visible on one of the switchback ledges carved into the mountainside. The foreground shows a railway bridge or trestle structure, emphasizing the engineering feat required to traverse this rugged terrain. The caption reads: \'Great Northern R.R. showing three tracks in the Cascade Mountains, Wash.\' The card is a divided-back printed lithograph, published by the Puget Sound News Company of Tacoma, Washington, and manufactured in Germany — a hallmark of quality printing during the pre-World War I era. The publisher information and a distinctive Oilette-style logo are printed on the reverse along with the standard divided-back layout. Catalog number B 2051 is noted. The postcard was mailed and bears a 1-cent Benjamin Franklin green stamp (Scott #300 series), postmarked August 16, 1909. The reverse contains a handwritten message in cursive ink, addressed to Miss A. Hammond. A blue crayon or colored pencil mark runs across the back, which was a common practice of the era for noting or sorting mail. Condition is Very Good overall. The front image is clean and sharp with good contrast. Minor corner wear and age toning are present. The blue crayon mark is confined to the reverse and does not affect the collectible front. A solid example for railroad, Pacific Northwest, or Great Northern Railway collectors.
