RARE ‘70s Pharaoh Akhenaten Incense Burner Egyptian AMORC Rosicrucian Museum, CA
This rare cone and stick incense burner was purchased around the 1970s from the main headquarters of the Ancient Mystical Order Rosase (AMORC), the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose, CA . The piece features Pharaoh Akhenaten, who changed his name from Amenhotep IV when he began worshipping a single deity, Aten. This ceramic piece is painted white with gold accented details and has a high-gloss sheen. After climbing steps to an altar, the pharaoh kneels with his hands over his heart. The front of the shrine is decorated with a gold ankh and two other cartouches – a royal figure with arms upraised and a golden circle -- that signify the pharaoh is offering praise to Aten, who was the Ancient Egyptian god of the solar disk. The incense burner is 7” long, 5” high, and 3.5” wide. The interior underside does show some resin buildup from slight use, but the piece has been stored in a box for over 40 years, so the exterior of the pharaoh and his shrine are in excellent vintage condition without cracks or crazing, only a fleabite on the bottom side of the steps (see photo). Stick incense goes in the hole at the top of the altar, while cone incense can be placed under the piece, on the burner’s original non-glossed holder (see photo), creating a dramatic scene as the smoke rises up through the hole in the altar. The burner comes with a card interpreting the hieroglyphic alphabet and an AMORC box of ceremonial incense filled with 12 rose-scented cones created in France specifically for use in Rosicrucian practices. Embodying an intriguing blend of historical periods and differing religions, along with its decorative, functional, spiritual, and esoteric elements, this incense burner would make an intriguing collector’s item or a unique gift.
