Greek Orthodox icon of the Crucifixion — \"He Stavrosis\" — painted in the Byzantine tradition with egg tempera and gold on canvas over old wood, set in a spectacular hand-carved pierced giltwood frame.
The composition follows the classic Byzantine Crucifixion: Christ on the Cross at center; the Mother of God with the holy women at one side; St. John the Theologian and Longinus the Centurion at the other; the walls of Jerusalem and the rocks of Golgotha below. Greek inscriptions throughout.
Overall size, frame included: 16-1/2 inches tall x 11-3/4 inches wide x 1 inch deep. The frame is deeply hand-carved with flowers, leaves and berries under an antiqued gold finish — it makes the piece.
On the back is the workshop\'s multi-language certificate with wax seal, stating the icon is hand-made in the old traditional manner of Byzantine art. (An ISO 9001:2000 sticker from the workshop is also on the back.) This is a modern work of devotional art, made to be prayed with and displayed — not an antique.
CONDITION: Very good. The painting is clean and bright; the gilt frame shows the intentional antiqued distressing of the finish. Please study all photos — they are of the exact piece you will receive.
SHIPPING: Packed with rigid protection around the carved frame and shipped with tracking.
