Samuel J Kirkwood was a notable Coralville, Johnson County, Iowa pioneer. In 1856 he left his mill,coated still covered in flour to speak with passion during the Founding Meeting of the Iowa GOP. As a founder of the Iowa GOP Party, he believed to be instrumental in the party's success in Iowa. An ardent Unionist as War Governor he was one He was one of Lincoln;s most staunch supporters and raised over 40 Iowa Volunteer regiments , the largest per-capita number of troops in the Union. He was fondly remembered by the Veterans for his extraordinary efforts to gather supplies for the soldiers and aid for their families. Kirkwood, was known for his integrity and in 1877was selected by newly elected President James A Garfield as Secretary of the Interior, the Department that had become infamous for it’s thefts ofTreatyfunds meant for the Native Americans. An Original Signed Calling Card , 4 x 2", ink sgd "S.J. Kirkwood, Oct 13/81", while serving as the newly appointed Secretary of the Interior and a month after the Assassination of President Garfield. Kirkwood is honored by monuments incl his statue in the US Capitol, and he is the namesake for Kirkwood College and numeous streets in cities incl Des Moines and Davenport. The card, on heavy stock paper has glued paper oval on the reverse, where it had likely been removed from an autograph album, but has only minor age spots and is Overall in VG Condition.
