Jalopy dirt track crash car Rosedale NY fairgrounds 1950s - Himes Estate Photo:
$35.00

An original 7x5" vintage photo from the Marty Himes estate.

Provenance: This photograph comes directly from the Marty Himes Racing Museum Collection, assembled over decades by Marty Himes - racer, restorer, and lifelong archivist of American racing. Every piece he preserved tells part of the story of motorsport’s rise from dirt tracks to the spectacle of the Indy 500. We acquired the majority of his photo collection after his passing. Many of his photos are extremely rare or even one of a kind. Professionally packaged in a rigid mailer for safe delivery.

Photo Overview

A stripped down, battered prewar Ford-style jalopy sits in the dirt infield of a packed fairgrounds oval, its hood and grille crushed after a hard crash during an early stock car race, while 1950-era sedans and trailers fill the background parking area and grandstands overflow with spectators at this New York area short track scene from the early 1950s, preserved from the Marty Himes Racing Museum Collection and stamped on the reverse with photographer F. Loutrel of Rosedale, New York.

In the years just after World War II, jalopy and stock car racing exploded across New York fairground ovals and small speedways, forming the grassroots foundation that would feed cars and drivers into NASCAR and Indy car competition. Photos like this, showing a wrecked dirt track jalopy in front of period tow-rigs and grandstands, capture the rough and ready character of postwar American short-track racing that has mostly vanished under modern safety rules and purpose-built machines. Add this scarce, direct-from-museum dirt track relic to your collection today before another serious vintage racing fan snaps it up.

Print analysis:
The photo is a glossy black and white silver gelatin print with a simple photographer address stamp, typical of early 1950s darkroom work. The subject cars and spectator clothing appear circa 1950-1953, matching the postal zone format "Rosedale 22, N.Y." which predates ZIP codes and was common in the late 1940s to early 1960s. There are no later reprint notations, halftone dots, or modern lab branding, supporting it being a period photographic print rather than a later copy. Based on these factors it is most likely a Type 1 original print made from the negative within a few years of exposure, c1950s.

Condition: Please see scans of the image we have provided for the most accurate and complete state of the photo. Many of the photos in this collection are very old and have age related wear, chips, creases, curling, etc. Others are remarkably well maintained.
