🛡 Spanghelm type helmet with mask and aventail (reconstruction) Presumed prototype: Northern Europe, 10th–11th century.Probable affiliation: Vikings, Normans, Anglo-Saxons, or Russian warriors.
General description of the design:
Helmet type:Spanghelm is a helmet consisting of several separate steel plates connected with rivets on a metal frame.
Dome (helmet body):
Made of 4–6 wedge-shaped steel plates.Rivets are located along the seams of the frame, forming stiffening ribs.Completed with a smooth hemispherical vault. There may be a mount for a pommel on the top (absent or decorative in the reconstruction).Mask (head plate with eye slits):
A single, one-piece forged or one-piece cut mask with oval eye sockets.Protects the upper part of the face: forehead, eyebrows, and bridge of the nose.Massive, thickened in the center — could partially deflect blows to the face. The shape is close to the \"goggle mask\", similar to the helmet from Yarm or individual Viking finds.Aventail:
Chainmail cloth made of steel rings, attached to the lower edge of the helmet.Protects the neck, back of the head, and partially the shoulders.Rings of the \"4 in 1\" weave, probably galvanized steel. The chainmail cloth is fastened with a wire edge or leather cord riveted to the rim of the helmet.
📜 Historical parallels:
Gjermundbu Helmet (Norway, 10th century) is the only full-size Viking helmet with a similar dome design.Yarm Helmet (England, 9th century) - found at the mouth of the Tisza, has a similar mask and design.Norman and Slavic helmets of the 11th century - often had a similar design and chainmail aventail.Similar elements are found among the warriors of Kievan Rus, especially in border contacts with the VarangiansWelcome!!The item you see is the item you get!Payment
