A wonderful smock from early twentieth century, worn on special hiring or market days over their clothes, In gorgeous indigo dyed linen this one is in almost perfect condition and was found carefully folded in a suitcase that hadn’t been opened for decades. It still has it’s original sheen (possibly from the application of egg white) and the makers label stitched inside with possibly the intended wearers name.
These now rare items have a great folk history and are getting much harder to find. A smaller size one such as this, is unheard of !! They seem to mainly come from Normandy region but I have had them from further afield in a variety of styles and this one was found in the Poitou Charente in South West France.
Museum quality and an absolutely beautiful find for textile collectors, fashion designers or agricultural historians.
