Robert Capa ULTRA RARE Vintage 20x24 Silver Gelatin Photo D Day Vietnam Normandy:
$2500.00

Up for historic, absolute sale is an incredibly rare and important artifact recovered from the legendary an irreplaceable, vintage mid-1950s 20x24 inch silver gelatin test print showcasing two of the most globally significant combat photographs ever captured by Magnum co-founder Robert Capa. This print is on silver gelatin but has halftone added to it. This is only one type of print that does this and it is a test print made to check the dot pattern before commiting to plate for halftone offset printing. As a custom printer who has done this exact process personally I know there is only one purpose for this type of production print. It is a lost process print required in the stages of photo reproduction for halftone plates for book making. Usually these were destroyed but this survived intact with all the printers notes on cards etc in the image. VERY VERY RARE🔍 Monograph Plate Authentication & PedigreeThe publishing pedigree of this specific sheet is ironclad: This exact layout print served as the direct, literal ancestral master file for the publishing plates in the definitive 1985 Alfred A. Knopf monograph, Robert Capa: Photographs (Edited by Richard Whelan and Cornell Capa).A side-by-side forensic analysis with the 1985 first edition textbook layout reveals an unforgeable match down to the exact millimeter. However the materials point to a mid century production as the photo does not glow under UV light which signifies it lacks the brighteners added to photo paper post mid 50s and was made before that paper transition occured.🔬 Forensic Paper & Technical Analysis
  • Specialized Production Stock: Struck on an incredibly thin, specialized single-weight silver gelatin paper engineered strictly for rapid pre-press evaluation, copy-camera calibration, and offset dot-contrast mapping.
  • OBA-Free UV Evaluation: Under ultraviolet (UV) wood\'s lamp inspection, the paper stock does not glow. It is entirely free of the synthetic Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) that became industry standard by the late 1950s, verifying a period-correct, mid-century paper manufacture.
  • Heavy Silvering-Out: The high-density shadow fields along the uncropped registration borders exhibit heavy silvering. This natural, chemical oxidation of the dense metallic silver particles within the gelatin emulsion physically verifies decades of genuine archival aging.
  • Studio Markers: Retains original copy negative borders, frame indicators, and the factory-sharp handwritten job routing code (240458) etched directly into the negative for the press operator\'s calibration.
The Imagery & Historical Weight
  • The Lower Panel (D-Day, June 6, 1944): Capa’s definitive masterpiece—the legendary, motion-blurred exposure of an American soldier wading through the Omaha Beach surf during the harrowing first wave of the Normandy invasion.
  • The Upper Panel (Thai Binh, Indochina, May 25, 1954): Frame 11 from the final roll of film Robert Capa ever shot. It documents a column of French troops marching through an open field in Vietnam, captured mere moments before Capa stepped on a landmine, tragically ending his life.
Print Specifications & Identifiers

VISUAL CONDITION REPORT (Strict Darkroom Archival Standards)
