Small early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Ann Aspden - 1842. This quirky little sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which has two crowns above and a bird standing to the right side
Lord in thy house I am told there is room and venturing hard behold I comeAnd can there tell me can there be among thy children room for me
The middle section of the linen contains a central-ish floral motif with a hovering cherub and bird to its left, a bird on a branch to the right and a rose bush and floral motif plus bird below. Mary Ann\'s name and the date of 1842 run across the bottom section of the linen with a flower, two fruit baskets, two dogs and a man above, then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with patches of faint staining. The sampler is behindglass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the coloursof the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 20th century gilt frame with a dark green inset. The frame is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.
Measures 13 3/4\" across x 10 3/4\" (sight size) and 15 1/2\" x 12 1/2\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS APPEAR SOMEWHAT DARK OR HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT\'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
