Some time ago, Dr. Gene Matsuura went through the text of Ganson's book with Tony Slydini and took careful notes as Slydini made valuable additions and observations based on his experience with the material after the book's initial publication. The Annotated Magic of Slydini is printed on the highest quality enamel paper. All 450 photos have been repositioned to correspond directly with the text and have been re-screened for optimum reproduction, including a half-dozen new photos not seen in the original. Slydini Quintino Marucci (1900 - 1991), also known simply as 'Slydini', was a world renowned Italian magician. Best known as a master of close-up artistry, he served as inspiration to a generation of magicians, including Doug Henning. Slydini was the son of an amateur magician who encouraged him to pursue sleight of hand at an early age. While still young, Slydini and his family moved from Italy to Argentina. He worked in South America's version of vaudeville, but after the Great Depression hit, work became scarce. His style of close-up was something that had never been seen before: he was one of the first to show close-up magic as an art in itself, rather than as a lead-in to bigger and grander illusions. In 1930, he moved to New York City, where he got a job at Hubert's Museum on Forty-second Street and later found work in carnivals and sideshows. On a visit to Boston, Slydini landed a three-day show and ended up performing in Boston for seven years. Slydini's magic was usually impromptu, rather than following a set sequence of tricks. He allowed his audience and the situation to dictate his show.
