Susano Morales is a highly prominent, second-generation Mexican folk artist and wood carver from Oaxaca, Mexico. He is widely celebrated for creating intricately detailed alebrijes—whimsical, hand-carved wooden animal sculptures crafted from native copal wood.Morales is particularly regarded as one of the finest carvers of his generation, recognized for infusing an exceptional sense of movement, personality, and expressive body language into a vast range of animals, from realistic wildlife to mythical figures.Artistry and Collaboration
- The Morales Workshop: He operates a renowned family workshop based in San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca. Many of his finished masterworks are a collaborative effort with his wife, Tioffera Jiménez. While Susano masterfully shapes the copal wood with a fluid sense of form, Tioffera meticulously hand-paints the figures with vibrant acrylic paints using the family's signature geometric, honeycomb, and Zapotec patterns.
