3.25"×3.75"×.75" deep hinged UNION CASE with AMBROTYPE PHOTO . The Union Cases were a composition of shellac and finely ground wood fibers (like sawdust) often reinforced with cellulose fibers and combined with pigments, which could then be molded into elaborate patterns. They were hinged to fold together to protect the photos.
The cases were made by Littleton Parsons and Co. This case contains original paperwork confirming patent dates of Oct.14 1856 and Apr.21 1857.
The metallic frames were a combination of copper and zinc called Pinchbeck, producing a gold simulating alloy.
The case and ambrotype photo were made in the late 1850's. The photo features a 19th century woman in attire of the period
The extreme edge of 2 corners are missing and there are some minor chips on the bottom right hand corner of the top of the case. There was also a "re-glue" close to the bottom of the top half of the case. All of these blemishes are visible in the photos.
The case latches closed with ease but does require manual depressing to open.
Overall the case and photo are in good condition for their age.A nice piece of Americana. Continental U.S only.
