Squadron History - The Firebirds

VAQ-33 was established in 1959 and became a pioneering force in electronic warfare (EW) and adversary support for the United States Navy . Unlike deployable carrier squadrons, the Firebirds specialized in simulating enemy radar, communications, and missile threats , providing realistic training to fleet aircrews, surface ships, and joint forces.

Operating a wide variety of specially modified aircraft—including the A-4 Skyhawk , FJ-4 Fury , EA-6A Intruder , and later the DA/EA-7 Corsair II —VAQ-33 supported:

• Fleet air defense and strike training

• Surface-to-air missile (SAM) threat replication

• Radar and electronic countermeasure testing

• Advanced tactics development during the Cold War

For decades, the Firebirds quietly shaped U.S. electronic warfare dominance by ensuring fleet forces trained against the most realistic threats possible.
