Alo was a longtime New York underworld figure closely associated with Meyer Lansky and organized crime’s gambling interests. This is an especially interesting piece because, unlike a typical press photograph or police image, it is a personal souvenir photograph that belonged to Alo himself.
The photograph remains housed in its original red presentation folder. The front is embossed:
“Memories of . . . . . . Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe – Paramount Hotel – New York”
The reverse of the photograph is handwritten “Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe” and bears the number 4489. The folder is also marked La Farge Studios, 313 West 75th Street, New York, N.Y.
The image shows Jimmy Alo seated alongside his wife, Flo, during an evening at the famed Diamond Horseshoe. The photograph measures approximately 6.5 x 4.25 inches. The closed presentation folder measures approximately 7.5 x 5.5 inches.The photograph displays well with expected age-related wear. The original presentation folder shows wear and age, and the cover is beginning to separate along the binding/spine. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
