Up for sale is a stunning, beautifully handcrafted Mid-Century Modernist Mexican mixed metals trinket box, dating to approximately the 1950s–1960s. Fusing organic materials with striking geometric modernism, this piece is heavily styled in the distinctive Taxco manner of legendary design houses like Los Castillo and Pepe Mendoza.
The lid features an exceptional, hand-cut stone mosaic background comprised of natural minerals (such as turquoise, azurite, and malachite). Inset into the vibrant green-and-blue stone mosaic is a stylized mixed-metal profile depicting a Native American or Aztec warrior chief wearing a detailed headdress.
Exterior: Hand-wrought brass mixed metal displaying a gorgeous vintage patina.
Lid Artistry: Intricate stone mosaic inlay paired with flush mixed-metal (brass/copper/silver-plate) detailing.
Underside: Features a clear, authentic mid-century stamp reading \"HECHO EN MEXICO\" confirming its artisan country-of-origin provenance.
Interior Lining: The interior base and sides are fully lined with a beautifully grained, dense rosewood or purpleheart hardwood. Historically used as a cigarette box or vanity stash chest, the wood interior remains clean and perfectly structured.
Hinge: A rugged, multi-segment barrel hinge holds the weighted lid safely and opens smoothly.
Overall State: Good vintage condition with fantastic historical character.
Patina & Finish: Crafted with a heavy solid brass frame, the exterior originally featured a silver-plated finish that has gracefully worn away over time. This exposure creates a highly desirable \'living finish\' patina that beautifully enhances its mid-century modernist appeal.
The brass features authentic, age-appropriate tarnish and oxidation (verdigris) on the underside and trim. We leave polishing choices strictly to the buyer to preserve the value of the original finish.
Stone Inlay: The mosaic is structurally intact. Please review all macro photographs carefully to appreciate the variance of the natural hand-cut stones.
Wood Interior: Clean, dry, and tight-fitting with gorgeous grain visibility. No deep cracks or heavy structural damage to the wood lining.
Dimensions: 5\"x3.75\"x1\" and approximately 4.5\"x3.5\" inside.
