Vintage Abelam Bapamini Yam Mask Papua New Guinea Woven Fiber Tribal Art For Sale

Vintage handwoven ceremonial yam mask, or bapamini/baba mini, attributed to the Abelam or neighboring Wosera peoples of the Maprik region of East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.These small basketry masks were created specifically to decorate large ceremonial yams during harvest festivals and competitive yam exchanges. They were not intended to be worn as human masks. The decorated yams could represent ancestral or spiritual beings and played an important role in ceremonial and social life.This example is tightly woven from natural vegetal fiber and features a prominent central nose ridge, openwork/concentric facial elements, and an elaborate radiating basketry framework surrounding the face. Traces of traditional ochre/yellow, red, white and dark pigment remain throughout.Based on comparisons with museum and sale examples, this piece is likely mid-20th century, approximately 1950s–1970s, although its precise age and collection history are unknown.Measures approximately 7¼ inches tall × 4½ inches wide.An interesting smaller example of traditional Papua New Guinea basketry and Oceanic ceremonial art with attractive age, surface wear and surviving pigment.I am not an expert in Oceanic or ethnographic art.
