Vintage USS Dewey DDG-45 U.S. Navy Metal Ship Seal Plaque
Impressive vintage USS Dewey DDG-45 U.S. Navy ship plaque featuring a heavy raised metal ship’s seal mounted to a thick wood backing. The seal is finished in black and gold and bears the ship’s motto “PAX PROPTER VIM” — “Peace Through Power.”
The plaque has substantial weight at approximately 6 lbs and displays beautifully. The metal emblem has an aged finish/patina, while the wood shows scratches, scuffs and other wear consistent with age and display. Hanging wire and hardware are present on the back. USS Dewey History
This seal represents the Cold War-era USS Dewey (DLG-14 / DDG-45). Built by Bath Iron Works in Maine, Dewey was commissioned on December 7, 1959. Her first commanding officer was Commander Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., who later became Chief of Naval Operations.
Dewey had an especially interesting service history. She participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis quarantine, provided naval gunfire support during the Vietnam War, and later participated in recovery operations following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986.
Originally designated DLG-14, Dewey underwent modernization and was reclassified as the guided-missile destroyer DDG-45 in 1975. She remained in service until August 31, 1990, completing more than three decades of U.S. Navy service.
The motto visible on this plaque, PAX PROPTER VIM, is associated with Dewey and translates to “Peace Through Power.” The motto was significant enough that it was later adopted as a tribute by USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000), honoring Zumwalt’s connection to Dewey.
